ALA Emerging Leaders 2011

Videogame Collection Development

ALA Emerging Leaders
is a program where librarians with strong potential to shape the future of ALA who are (1) under 35 years of age and (2) working in the profession less than five years have an opportunity to build their leadership skills and learn more about ALA while working on a project for a division/group/committee/roundtable.  Sponsorships from groups, in the form of financial assistance and/or professional opportunities within that group are also available.   Often, Emerging Leaders go on to leadership roles in the group that put forth their project or the group that sponsored them (for example, as a result of my EL sponsorship from the Reference and User Services Association, I will be co-chairing a task force on reforming the organization).

As per our press release from 8bitlibrary.com, "Team G, comprised of Erik Bobilin, Abby Johnson, Kate Kosturski, Jonathan Lu, and Nicole Pagowsky, will present information on issues and best practices when developing a video game collection, including Circulation & Access, Selection & Purchasing, Weeding, and an ideal MARC record. The team surveyed public, academic, and school libraries across the United States and Canada and spoke with experts in the field to find out what innovative ideas might change what we know about video game collections in libraries."

Our formal research page will be updated post-conference (approximately July 2011), and several team members will be continuing the work after the end of our year.  We also set up a project preview page, which includes bios, opportunities to see our poster and videogame-related events, as well as our conference picks.
