LIS 660 - Collection Development

Collection Development Policy for the Saiber LLC Law Library

Using the law library I was working in at the time as a model, and the experience I was gaining in that position (more detail is available on the Field Experience page), I drafted this model collection development policy as the course's capstone experience.  It gives an overview of the law library, outlines selection for all resources (print and electronic), access and circulation, weeding, partnership and resource sharing, collection protection, and collection and policy evaluation.  The policy also includes a full subject analysis, using the ALA collection codes.

It should be made clear that this policy is not official policy of the library, nor was ever considered as official policy for the library by the librarian or Saiber administration.  The choice of the Saiber library was out of convenience and as an extension of the work experience I was gaining at the time of the course. It should be read as a mere class assignment and nothing more.

Subject Analysis Tutorial

I prepared this tutorial as graduate assistant for the course after noticing that many students struggled with the concept of subject analysis.  Many students confused the concepts of "density" and "intensity" and proper evaluation of their collection with the ALA collection codes.  Using the subject analysis from my course assignment as a guide (which the students received with the tutorial), I broke the process down step by step and offered examples.  Students remarked later how useful this tutorial was and how much easier it made the subject analysis process.
